Allowing same-sex couples to marry will create few new rights for homosexuals but it will spell legal confusion for the rest of society as the definition of marriage will have to change for everyone, the Church of England said last night.
The first official comment on the subject from the established Church came as the Government began an official consultation on the proposal.
Theresa May, the Home Secretary, and Lynne Featherstone, the equalities minister, unveiled a document setting out how same-sex couples would be allowed to register civil marriages.
The document made clear that Churches and other opponents would be powerless to stop the change, even if they mobilise hundreds of thousands of objections.
Critics dismissed the consultation as a “sham” in which opposition would be “ignored”. The homosexual rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said that the proposals now discriminate against heterosexuals by allowing same-sex couples the option of marriage or civil partnerships but only marriage for heterosexual couples.
The Church of England hinted that the proposals could undermine its position as the established Church.
